LS400 TIMING SYMPTOMS AND CATS

LS400, I CONSIDER SOME OF THE BEST MADE VEHICLES BUT NOT WITHOUT FAULTS AS WITH AS WITH ANY VEHICLE MADE IT WILL NEED WORK WHEN HE GETS OLDER.

if you have checked your vehicle and it will not start a run you have checked fuel pressure, the injectors are firing, and you have spark and there is no plugged up air passages, no codes; then the next step is to check your timing belt and your timing marks.

at the belt you know has not been changed and over 100,000 miles it may be stretched and need to be changed.

if you did not while changing the timing belt install all new quality parts such as the timing belt adjuster which is on the bottom of the vehicle with held in by two bolts and the tensioner which is like the roller, chances are the hydraulic tensioner and or adjuster which is at the bottom of the vehicle failed and will be off two or three teeth on the passenger side due to the length or the longest length on that side, the driver side cam timing mark and the crank timing mark may still be in time, but passenger side timing mark may be out of time.

if the vehicle has been driven like this for a long period of time and the catalytic converters of course on these vehicles are getting older it will get plugged.

so say that you figured it out and you change the hydraulic adjuster underneath the car by the crankshaft pulley and you do fix and adjust your timing marks but it doesn't have a lot of power or it's having a harder time running check your catalytic converters that may be plugged.

you may only have to run it at night time when it is dark outside let it idle for a good time and then increase the RPMs, if you do that and you do have a plug catalytic converter or converters you will see that the exhaust system will turn cherry red and easy to see at night.

another way is to undo the upstream for the o2's closest to the motor to create an exhaust leak and see if it runs better and if it does chances are you have a plug catalytic converter due to the timing being off for a period of time.
