What is the best type of exercise can you do if you have pulmonary fibrosis? This is a very common question that I get on this channel. There is not one form of exercise that is necessarily the best, as long as you are maintaining or building your strength, you will probably be able to cope with pulmonary fibrosis much better.
It is also important to do exercise that you enjoy, while potentially not injuring yourself or working through pain. For example, if you have bad knees due to osteoarthritis, you may want to exercise another body part. As long as you get a bit breathless while exercising, you are probably doing a good job.
If you have pulmonary fibrosis or another chronic lung disease, you may need to set a lower baseline for yourself. You may not be able to do what was easy for you a few years ago. Just try to build up from your current level, as this will help with your daily activities and to cope with the interstitial lung disease and fibrosis.
Exercising also has the benefit of making you aware of your breathing patterns, to help you cope better and to control your breathing. People who have pulmonary fibrosis often have moments of panic when they cannot stop a rapid and shallow breathing pattern, which can cause a lot of anxiety. Being able to gain control during those difficult moments can go a long way to improving your overall quality of life.
