It's just applying a layer of "mortar," but the trick is all in the details; if it's not done well, the downstairs neighbor's ceiling will become a "waterfall." There are three key points:

1. The "three seams" are critical: The师傅 (master craftsman) carefully applies the sealant to the wall corners, pipe joints, and drain edges. These areas are most prone to cracking and leaking, so waterproof sealing material (like a dough-like substance) must be applied first to form a rounded arc, and then the waterproofing is applied. This is like patching these "joints."

2. The "raincoat" needs two coats, one horizontal and one vertical: The first coat is applied vertically, and after it dries, the second coat is applied horizontally. This covers the brush marks from the first coat, leaving no gaps. The walls should be coated to at least 1.8 meters high (in the shower area), the floor must be completely covered, and the corners should be thicker.

3. The finished work must be "tested with water": After the waterproofing is completely dry, block the drain and fill the entire floor with water, letting it sit for 48 hours. Then go to the downstairs neighbor's apartment and check their ceiling; only if there are no water stains is it considered successful! This is called the "water retention test," the ultimate test for waterproofing.
