Where does our generic imagery of the "fairy tale" originate? Often filled with medieval castles and clothing, regardless of the story, there must be some universal source for these illustrations (and choice of era). It turns out that fairy tales, dress reform, and the Pre-Raphaelites are all muddled up into a strangely cohesive and inspirational style!

Artistic dress, as it was often called, takes many different forms, though most are flowing, soft, and historically inspired. Early dress reform looked to "bloomers" and shorter skirts for more practical clothing. They also argued for a less intensive corset, or none at all. But the styles were far from fashionable or flattering. Artistic dress took the principles of healthy and comfortable clothing and looked to the past for inspiration. They pulled on the Classical wrapped styles as well as the medieval and renaissance eras. These styles became popular with the artistic crowd and were not only worn by women participating or adjacent to the Pre-Raphaelite movement, but were worn as models for many of the paintings. Liberty & Co (now Liberty of London) even opened a Artistic and Historic Costume Studio in 1884 to create more pieces in this range.
