In February 1942, the Allies had faced the Japanese invasion forces at Badung Strait and the Java Sea. Having severely lost the Battle of the Java Sea, the remaining Allied fleet prepared to leave Java behind and sail to Australia. Among the departing ships were the USS Houston and HMAS Perth.
