How to Wire a 70 Volt Commercial Speaker Sound System

Generally, the sound systems you’ll find in a commercial environment like a restaurant, retail store, or school gymnasium are different from what you may be used to seeing in a home theater system.

Maybe you're trying to self-install a 70-volt commercial system, and you're not sure where to start. In this video, Andrew talks about the basic things to look at when going to install your system and briefly touches on how to integrate 70-volt volume controls into your system.

The first thing you will want to do when you get your speakers is to adjust the tap settings. The tap settings are essentially the floodgates of that speaker. The lower you tap it, the softer it will be; the higher you tap it, the louder it will be able to get.

You'll then need a mixer amplifier or a rack mount mixer amplifier. Attach your speaker wire to the speaker output on the back of the amplifier. The commercial-grade speaker wire should have one black and one red wire. Your positive wire is your red, and black is your negative wire. Make sure the wire is snug but not too tight.

From here, run the wire to your first speaker. Most Pure Resonance Audio speakers have a 4-terminal euro block, which makes wiring very simple.
You'll just connect your red wire to the “+” terminal and connect your black wire to the “-” terminal.

Theoretically, you have one speaker connected, so you can connect your Bluetooth device, play some music, test it out, and make sure you did everything correctly.

To wire your next speaker, simply go out of the second set of + and - terminals and run the wire to your next speaker. Continue this process until you wire your very last speaker.

The beauty about a 70-volt system is you can have as many speakers as you want, as long as your amplifier can handle it. Keep in mind that when you're adjusting your tap settings, the sum of those tap settings on all of your speakers needs to be 80% or less of your amplifier's available power. This will ensure you have enough headroom to protect your equipment.

Now, if you want to independently control a speaker's volume or group of speakers, you can integrate one or multiple 70-volt volume controls. These are like a dimmer light switch, a wall plate with a dial, but instead of controlling the lights, it controls the volume of your speakers.

Volume controls will also have 4 terminals, much like the Euro block but with an “amp in” and a “speaker out”.

Let’s say you want (2) speakers controlled by one volume control. To do this, you will still have your positive and negative connection on the back of the amp, but this time you will first connect your wires to the “amp in” on the volume control. From here, you would go from the “speaker out” and daisy chain your (2) speakers together just like we did before.

If you want to incorporate multiple volume controls, you can also daisy chain these together. Just ensure you do so through the “amp in” terminals”.

Just like with your speakers, with volume controls, you can theoretically have as many as you want. We've had scenarios where there's a dental clinic that wants ones in every individual patient room, and you can do that.

It is important to note that volume controls also have a power rating. So you have to ensure that your amplifier can handle the watts you're putting through it with that 20% headroom.
