In this video, I explain why the aim of fitness shoulder NEVER be perfection. Unless you’re a professional athlete or a competitive bodybuilder, being too dogged in your pursuit of perfect health will do you more harm than good.

I believe that it’s not only “okay” to sometimes take a break, but actually crucial that you do. I think it’s a bad thing to constantly berate yourself for carrying a little bit of extra belly fat, or for having arms that you think are too slim. I think expecting to maintain a perfect diet 100% of the time is unrealistic, miserable, and self-destructive.

We MUST accept that there will be times when our training is going as well as we want it to. We must take time off when our body is telling us to. And we mustn’t feel pressured by online content to live up to impossible standards.

This is a big part of the problem: fitness influencers want to sell products and drive subscriptions. So they project an image of perfect training and an idealised lifestyle. The implicit message is: unless you train with absolute dedication, you will never have the life of your dreams.

This is not only unrealistic… it’s also misguided to begin with. Muscle does not equal happiness. It doesn’t lead to conventional notions of success in most cases. And what “success” looks like should be highly individual. For me, it’s a tuna sandwich, a stack of comic books, and my family snoozing around me.

None of this is to throw shade at people who are dedicated to their training. Of course: I LOVE training. And I have enjoyed countless benefits that come from it. But we should all “train to live” and not “live to train.” Otherwise, it can become an obsession that prevents us from enjoying other parts of our lives. That damages our psychology. That leads to injury or dangerous drug use.
