Once there lived a king Indradyumna who was a staunch devotee of Lord Vishnu. Since he disrespected sage Agastya he was cursed to become an elephant Gajendra.
One day Gajendra went to a lake to get some lotus flowers to worship Lord Vishnu. As he took so e lotus and rose to the bank of the lake hus leg was caught between the jaws of a hungry crocodile. Gajendra screamed in pain and struggled to free himself from the clutches of the crocodile but in vain. Desperate he lifted the lotus and called out to Lord Vishnu thus"Adi moola, Aapath bandhava, anatha ralshaka, akhilanda koti brahmanda nayaka Narayana akhila guro bhagavan namaste". Hearing his devotee Mahavishnu descended to the earth on his Garuda vahana and released his Sudharshana chakra which severed the head of the crocodile. Gajendra was set free a d attained Moksha.
The philosophy of the story is that the elephant symbolizes man, the crocodile symbiosis his sins and the lake Samsara Sagara. With the lotus of bhakthi towards the Lord, man can be relieved of his sins in this mortal world and attain moksha. Namaste JaiSrikrisha
