NOT ALL Martial Arts USE Sparring to Prepare for Self Defence! Many martial arts teachers don't believe that Sparring is REALISTIC FOR THE REAL WORLD! Well this week I discuss what I learnt from sparring and how it could relate to fighting for self defence.

For me learning how to fight has been a lifetime endeavour, but in 1986 I began learning Wing Chun. By 1990 I had dedicated my life fulltime to refining my study of this practical fighting system. Here are the 6 KEY SKILLS THAT I LEARNT WHERE REQUIRED FOR REAL LIFE FIGHTS.

This is a personal reflection of my martial arts training. What I have learnt about fighting and how I have learnt it. Please note, this footage was taken from various training sessions between 1992 and 1993 with my many training partners in the UK Wing Chun Kung Fu Association. I owe them my gratitude as I would not be where I am today without them.

As I always say to my present day students, “You are only as good as the people you train with”. It’s far better to be a small fish in a big sea, than a big fish in a small pond. If you truly want to learn how to defend yourself in a fight then you need to train with people that you can trust, more importantly help you learn how to fight.

FEEL FREE TO OFFER YOUR THOUGHTS ON HOW YOU TRAIN FOR A FIGHT. BUT PLEASE RESPECT THE FACT THAT THIS FOOTAGE IS NEARLY 25 YEARS OLD AND TIMES HAVE CHANGED.

No matter what martial art you practice from my experience these skills are essential to learning how to fight, even with Wing Chun. In fact they are often overlooked by the younger generation of Wing Chun practitioners.

HERE ARE MY TOP 6 SKILLS THAT I THINK ARE VITAL FOR LEARNING HOW TO DEFEND YOURSELF IN A FIGHT

Skill #1 HAND & CLINCH FIGHTING
This is simply the idea of learning how to get hold of your attacker’s arms in order to spoil their punches or attacks.

Skill #2 SIMPLE DISTRACTION
The idea of distraction, playing dirty so that you can set up big punches to finish a fight quickly.

Skill #3 RECOVERING RANGE
You must learn what to do when someone rushes into you. This requires that you change the range of your punch or strike.

Skill #4 DISTANCE CONTROL
You must keep your attackers at a comfortable distance in which you can manage your attacker’s movement.

Skill #5 DRAWING LEADS
This is a clever way to get your attacker to open up and expose themselves to a counter punch. It normally requires you to punch or move to entice an attack.

Skill #6 BACK AGAINST THE WALL
This is the key skill in learning how to defend yourself in a fight. You must be able to fight with your back against a wall.

We have lots more videos on how to fight with Wing Chun. Please visit our channel. Better yet feel free to leave a comment or a suggestion of what you would like us to film for you. It does not have to be about Wing Chun it can be about any subject related to fighting, how to fight, Wing Chun techniques, or even Wing Chun vs other styles of martial arts.
