According to the Shiva Purana, at the beginning of creation there was a war for supremacy between two supreme powers, Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma. These two forces started clashing with each other but no solution could be found.

That's why Lord Shiva appeared there in the form of a linga-shaped light pillar and created an eternal light pillar in front of him and put a condition that whoever finds its beginning and end, he will be considered supreme.

Brahma and Vishnu went out in different directions to find the end of that supremely wonderful pillar of light, but neither found its beginning nor its end. And in the same way, both these powers realized the true form of the 'Supreme Power' of Shivling. After this he bowed down to that great pillar of light in the form of Shivling.

शिव पुराण के अनुसार, सृष्टि के प्रारम्भ में दो परम शक्तियों, भगवान विष्णु और भगवान ब्रह्मा के बीच श्रेष्ठता के लिए युद्ध हुए । ये दोनों शक्तियां आपस में टकराने लगीं लेकिन इसका कोई हल न निकल सका ।

तभी वहाँ भगवान शिव एक लिंगाकार प्रकाश स्तम्भ रूप में प्रकट हुए और उनके समक्ष एक अनादि प्रकाश स्तंभ पैदा किया और ये शर्त रखी, जो भी इसका आदि और अंत खोज लेगा, वही सर्वोच्च माना जायेगा ।

ब्रह्मा और विष्णु, उस परम अद्भुत प्रकाश स्तम्भ के छोर को खोजने अलग-अलग दिशाओं में निकल गए परंतु न तो उसका आदि मिला और न हीं अंत । और इसी तरह इन दोनों शक्तियों को, शिवलिंग की ‘सर्वोच्च शक्ति के वास्तविक स्वरूप का अनुभव हुआ। इसके बाद उन्होंने शिवलिंग के स्वरुप वाले उस महान प्रकाश के स्तम्भ को प्रणाम किया ।
