Though Dandasana might look like an insignificant addition to the Primary Series, it actually serves an important purpose that affects the rest of your practice.

In this tutorial, we’re showing you how to do DANDASANA \ STAFF POSE and PASCIMATTANASANA \ WEST SIDE STRETCH POSE as practiced in Ashtanga's Primary Series. You’ll learn the traditional vinyasa cues and Sanskrit count as you move first into Dandasana and then into the Pacsimattanasana variations. We share how Dandasana is used to set up your body for all the work you’ll be doing in forward bends and why it shouldn't be looked past. You’ll learn how to properly engage your legs, spine, core, and arms as you hold Dandasana and move into Pascimattanasana, with a focus on how to evenly engage through your upper body as you fold.
