How the Iron Dome Protects Israel From Missiles

How do you protect a city from missiles? With an iron dome.

Israel’s Iron Dome is a weapons system that tracks and intercepts incoming rocket attacks at a range of up to 44 miles. Israel is under near constant threat of rocket attack that threatens Israeli civilians during times of conflict and the Iron Dome system is designed to counter this threat.

The Iron Dome can detect both mortar and rocket fire in adverse weather conditions and has a variety of intercept missile variants to counter a large array of threats. This range extends 180 degrees in all directions being limited in its capability only by the ground itself.

This platform isn’t impenetrable though. It’s designed to provide constant protection against lower tier rocket capabilities like those possessed by Hamas and would likely be overwhelmed in the face of rocket barrages from advanced conventional forces.

To protect against those, it would be up to the American Patriot missile batteries that can take down the advanced threats that even the Iron Dome can’t handle.
