TUNISIA 5 –Hammamet e il ricordo di Craxi (with English subtitles!)

Il Capo Bon è una penisola che funge da ponte naturale tra Tunisia e Sicilia, dunque tra Africa ed Europa. Hammamet ne è la cittadina più facilmente raggiungibile dalla capitale, Tunisi, in quanto la più vicina. Questo centro abitato, che conserva una medina medievale praticamente intatta, si è sviluppato quale ambita meta balneare soprattutto dagli anni Venti, e scopriremo il perché. Ma soprattutto evoca tra gli italiani una pagina densa di colpi di scena della storia della nostra Penisola, in quanto residenza scelta dal noto politico Bettino Craxi per potervi trascorrere gli ultimi anni della propria vita. Tutto ciò però offusca quella che è invece l’origine di Hammamet, un antico centro romano che tradisce nel nome le proprie origini puniche: benvenuti a Pupput!

Hammamet is the town most easily reachable from the capital, Tunis, as it is the closest. This town, which preserves a practically intact medieval medina, has developed as a sought-after seaside destination especially since the 1920s, and we will find out why. But above all it evokes among us Italians a page full of twists and turns in the history of our Peninsula, as the residence chosen by the well-known politician Bettino Craxi to spend the last years of his life there. However, all this obscures what is the real origin of Hammamet, an ancient Roman center whose name betrays its Punic origins: welcome to Pupput!
