In this video, I explain the following concepts:

Difference between a Team Site and a Communication Site - depending on the Site Type, you would manage permissions differently

How to set up permissions on a Communication Site. If you have a Communication Site - you would need to rely on the 3 built-in SharePoint Security Groups: Site Visitors, Site Members, and Site Owners.

How to set up permissions on a Team Site. If you have a Team Site, that means it is also connected to a Microsoft 365 group, which in turn is also connected to other applications within a Microsoft 365 eco-system (Planner, Teams, Group Outlook Calendar). So the way you would manage permissions on a Team Site would be via a Microsoft 365 Group membership.

How to bypass Microsoft 365 Group membership. Sometimes, you might have a Team Site connected to a Microsoft 365 Group, but you just need to allow access to the SharePoint Site itself. In this case, you would need to manage permissions at the site level, bypassing the Microsoft 365 Group membership.

How to set up permissions on a Team Site without a Microsoft 365 Group. In some cases, you might have a Team Site not connected to a Microsoft 365 Group. In that case, you would be managing permissions via 3 SharePoint Security Groups (Visitors, Members, Owners). Just like on a Communication Site.
