It’s said that an airplane can take off even on a conveyor belt moving in the opposite direction. To test this myth, the MythBusters first used a treadmill — but it was too short for the plane to take off. Then, they simulated a moving surface by pulling kraft paper and successfully launched a remote-controlled plane. Finally, they tested a real light aircraft, which took off at 16 mph after just 85 feet. Later, they repeated the test on waterproof material pulled by a truck at 25 mph, and the plane still lifted off. That’s because the conveyor belt’s motion only affects the wheels, while lift comes from the engine’s thrust. This experiment proved that a conveyor belt does not prevent an airplane from taking off.
