Tanuja Samarth, popularly known as Tanuja, is an Indian film actress, who predominantly works in the Hindi film industry. She was born on 23 September 1943 in Bombay, Bombay Presidency, British India. Tanuja was born in a Marathi family. Her father was filmmaker Kumarsen Samarth. Legendary actress, director and producer, Shobhna Samarth was her mother. She has three sisters, and one brother. Her older sister was popular actress Nutan. Her two other sisters are; Chatura, an artist, and Reshma. Her brother name is Jaideep.

She married to veteran Late Indian director Shomu Mukherjee in 1973. Their daughters are actresses Kajol Mukherjee and Tanisha Mukherjee. Actor Ajay devgan is her son in law. Nysa Devgan, Yug Devgan are his grandchildren. He father in law was Sashadhar Mukherjee, the owner of Filmalaya studios. Her mother in law Sati Rani Devi was the only sister of the Ganguly brothers. Late Rono Mukherjee, Late Joy Mukherjee and Deb Mukherjee and Subir Mukherjee are her brother in law. She is the aunt of actors Mohnish Behl, Rani mukherjee, Sharbani, and director Ayan Mukherjee.
