The plans of the US electric car manufacturer Tesla to build a battery cell factory in Grünheide near Berlin are taking shape. As the Brandenburg Ministry of the Environment announced on Tuesday evening, the company has informed the approval authority that the application for approval for the Gigafactory is to be changed.

Accordingly, the group is striving to change the existing application for approval "due to procedural aspects and Tesla's wish to bring further improvements to the automobile factory into the current process". "The amended application also includes the construction and operation of a battery cell production facility," it said.

Because application documents for the project must now be re-interpreted, there is a risk of delays and a later start of production. So far, Tesla had only submitted one application for a car factory, the final approval of which has not yet been received. Tesla, therefore, builds at its own risk - through several early approvals. The company had applied for the plant to start production in July 2021.
