New research at the Sensory Motor Integration Laboratory Directed by Professor Torres is revealing that the brain has two fundamentally different learning styles. One well known to researchers and educators is deliberate and intentional. That style depends on well defined goals, prompting and instructions. These goals or targets generate an error that the brain can correct and optimize (minimize) the error to learn guided by specific sources of sensory input. The other (new) style that we discovered is coined exploratory, as it resembles that of babies self-discovering what needs to be done or what goal is important to attain in a given situation. Unlike the error corrective one, the exploratory mode seeks no goals, makes no immediate predictions of future events and has no objective. It is a mere wondering of the brain whereby all future events are equally probable and it is through this goal less exploratory behavior that the brain self-discovers, autonomously, a regularity that biases it to begin the search for a systematic pattern conducive of the self-discovery of the goal or objective of a given task. No instructions or prompts are necessary here. The brain builds up its autonomy and owns the consequences of what it self-discovered!
