The Necker has one main job – to prepare the can for receiving the end. It also does many other things, including reforming the bottom, performing light testing, vision inspection, and of course – the Necker saves metal by putting a smaller end on the can!

Special thanks to Belvac Production Machinery for providing great footage of their 595 Necker! Now let’s get started…

It all starts at the infeed, where air fed tunnel track loads cans onto a vacuum transfer starwheel, which them sends cans through multiple turrets.

Each turret has a job. The first sets of turrets are each responsible for one stage of necking. After necking, the subsequent turrets will do such things as flanging the neck, reforming the dome (to allow for light-weight cans to withstand the required internal pressure requirements), and testing the can for pin-holes and visual defects.

After the can exits the Necker, it heads to the Palletizer.
