Could Alzheimer’s blood tests replace spinal fluid tests? Study shows how well blood tests perform

A study by researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and Lund University in Sweden shows how Alzheimer's blood tests can be as good at detecting molecular signs of Alzheimer’s disease in the brain as the FDA-approved spinal fluid tests. This allows for accurate diagnosis in the early stages of disease.

The findings indicate that a blood test may soon replace more expensive and invasive brain scans and spinal taps for detecting signs of Alzheimer’s.

The findings show how a blood test is as accurate as spinal fluid tests in patients with mild symptoms, so that it can detect Alzheimer’s disease when symptoms haven’t emerged. And blood tests are easier and more accessible.

"It's going to represent a new way we do clinical research, the way we recruit patients for trials, as well as patient care, in terms of how we diagnose people who have memory problems," said co-senior author Randall J. Bateman, MD, Professor of Neurology at Washington University.
