A large part of the historic old town is now a pedestrian zone. The oldest buildings date back to the second half of the 16th century; shortly before there was a city fire (1547) that destroyed many buildings. Of the more than 700 monuments in Detmold, about half are located in the city centre. As you walk through the town centre, you can see richly decorated half-timbered houses as well as historic stone houses.
