Vaccon’s CDF Series Air Amplifiers and vacuum cups simulate a pick and place application for handling parsnips / vegetables in a food processing and packaging operation. Once washed, the parsnips are picked up from a conveyor belt and placed in trays to trim their leaves. Residual water from the wash can make the parsnips slippery, adding to the challenge of picking them up securely.

Air Amplifiers offer high vacuum flow providing the lifting capacity to safely and securely transfer the parsnips. Their straight-through design allows water to pass through the pump without clogging.

Parsnips vary in size, shape and weight, and have curved, uneven surfaces with bumps and ridges. To overcome leakage inherent in handling irregular shapes and textures, Vaccon demonstrates two different options of air amplifier / vacuum cup combinations.

Option one is a standard, aluminum CDF 375H air amplifier with 2 flexible bellows cups that deliver the suction necessary to pick up the parsnips. The flexible bellows cups provide a tight seal and easily adjust to the size fluctuations between parsnips.

Option two is a customized CDF 750HFM air amplifier made of Delrin® with a High Flex vacuum cup made of FDA grade material for food processing operations. The High Flex cup collapses to conform to the parsnip surface and securely wraps around the vegetable. Both solutions pick up the parsnips quickly, efficiently, and safely, without damaging them.

Air amplifiers are field adjustable to meet specific customer requirements. Cost effective and energy efficient, air amplifiers operate on the Coanda effect, where a small volume of compressed air is converted into a large flow of ambient air, achieving amplification ratios as high as 40:1 (output to input).
