EDIGMA SEMIBREVE Award Winner 2024
Chasing Waterfalls
Hidden Edges (Myriam Bleau & Lucas Paris)

Sponsored by Edigma, a Portuguese company leader in the development of interactive experiences, multi-touch technology and digital signage projects, the EDIGMA SEMIBREVE Award was established to celebrate and promote works that explore the interactivity, sound and image supported through the use of digital technologies.

Consisting of a twisted screen structure with an unconventional, fluid, and organic shape, Chasing Waterfalls is an audiovisual installation which evokes a suspended waterfall. AI generated animations of flowing water, seemingly organic but machine made, slowly decompose into pixelated flows of information and data patterns. While the mainstream unfolds on the surface of the structure, ephemeral elements are revealed on different intersecting planes using anamorphic effects, thus only meaningful when seen from a specific angle.
As the title is a nod to the 90s TLC song, the work playfully questions the relentless pursuit towards dematerialized information, especially through machine learning and the fast encoding of human knowledge within models barely larger than 1GB.

Hidden Edges is the new creative collective founded by Myriam Bleau and Lucas Paris. Within this instance, the two artists who are often seen on stage explore the installation format. The duo explores the more abstract edges of their personal aesthetics, through their deep technical expertise designing and creating software and machines.

Lucas Paris creates AV works, digital sound and industrial design. His main focus is in synthesis, with its mathematical potential for abstract manipulation of matter and perception. His recent works have extended an earlier focus in emotion, perception and physicality into content that is critical and satirical of consumption, advertising and social media psychosis.

Myriam Bleau is a composer, digital artist and performer based in Montréal. Using music and sound as a point of departure, she has created gestural electronic music performances, audiovisual interfaces, installations and interactive devices that articulate sound, light, movement and symbols. Her work investigates performance, both as a codified cultural manifestation, and as an embodied (re)enactment of symbolic systems through human and non-human agencies.

Hidden Edges is supported by the Quebec Office Barcelona
