CINCINNATI (WKRC) - A public health alert has been issued for Hamilton County due to what appears to be an increase in opioid overdoses.

According to the alert, there were more emergency department visits and preliminary deaths in the past seven days than the average in the 90 days before that. Those two things are used to estimate opioid overdoses in Hamilton County.

The Hamilton County Heroin Coalition and its public health partners issued the alert to help both drug users, first responders and the community to be more aware of the overdose dangers.

Some of the recommendations are that users should not do drugs alone, avoid mixing drugs and call 911 after every overdose even if the person has been revived.

First responders and health professionals are advised to carry extra doses of naloxone, have gloves and respiratory protection and avoid field testing drugs.
