25 days. That’s all it took for one of Nazi Germany’s most respected field marshals to see the inevitable end. In late June 1944, with the Normandy beachhead secured and Allied might flooding into France, Field Marshal Gerd von Rundstedt made a desperate, confidential plea to the German High Command: negotiate for peace immediately, or face total destruction. His warning was the last, best chance to avoid a catastrophic final year of war. It was also completely ignored.
