Another joked that she was desk-trained and probably didn’t even know the weight of a real rifle. Someone else sneered that people like her belonged behind paperwork, not anywhere near a fight.

Off to the side—far enough to be overlooked, close enough to hear every word—stood Staff Sergeant Riley Monroe. Thirty-four years old. Now a civilian contractor. Once an Army sniper.
