Born on December 31, 1869, in Le Cateau-Cambrésis, France, Matisse initially pursued a career in law. However, after an appendicitis operation left him bedridden, he discovered his passion for art. Matisse enrolled at the Académie Julian in Paris, where he studied under established artists and began to develop his unique artistic vision.
He co-founded the Fauvist movement, which sought to liberate color from its representational role and use it to evoke emotions and create visual impact.
Color played a central role in Matisse's art. He believed in the emotive power of color and used it boldly and unconventionally. His paintings burst with vibrant hues and dynamic compositions, creating a sense of energy and vitality.
