You’ll have to pardon the mess in these gardens because I’m on a massive garden cleanup.

However, I wanted to discuss the benefits of planting gardens using a polyculture method. I used to plant one bed of tomatoes, one bed of peppers, etc, but started to realize that combining them had several benefits:

Not much weed growth, so less work

Protects the soil, not only from weeds, but maintains the microbiology and doesn’t dry out

Maintains moisture better

Cools soil around plants where a few degrees could make a difference in the high heat

Depending on what you plant, you could be adding beneficial nutrients right back into the soil

Companion planting to deter bugs, plus some types get masked or hidden amongst the other items so the bugs may have a harder time finding a snack

As long as you vary plant height and root depths, there isn’t too much competition (though be mindful of your plant spacing overall so you don’t crowd everything—no airflow tends to be bad in my region with our accumulated moisture and heat).
