Two former U.S. presidents just broke their silence — and what they said about Trump’s latest move shocked even veteran diplomats.
Barack Obama and George W. Bush appeared together in a rare, emotional video farewell to the U.S. Agency for International Development — USAID — which has now been officially dismantled.

The six-decade-old agency, created by President John F. Kennedy, was designed to fight poverty, disease, and disaster — and to quietly build American influence through humanitarian goodwill.

But on Monday, USAID’s time as an independent agency ended. Starting Tuesday, it will be absorbed into the State Department by order of Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Its replacement: a new program called “America First.”

Obama called the move “a colossal mistake” and “a tragedy,” saying gutting USAID erases decades of life-saving global work.
Bush, typically silent in modern politics, also voiced concern. And in a heartbreaking moment, U2’s Bono broke into tears while reciting a poem in tribute to the thousands of USAID workers losing their jobs.

Under Trump’s direction — and backed by Elon Musk — the agency was labeled a hub of “radical left lunatics” and shut down. Many staff were abruptly terminated by mass email.
