The idea of an aether pervading all of space has roots in antiquity. A completely empty space would have no physical qualities. It has impedance of ~ 377 Ohms, for instance, very important for designing antennas. There is something there to interact with propagating electromagnetic waves. It has existence. Is it physical? Yes, but not in the pre-1905 conceptional sense. Einstein's 1920 lecture (below) was given to clarify his position on the aether that he conceived as being Lorentz Invariant, which was different from the conclusions of Special Relativity.

In Albert Einstein's 1905 paper On the Electrodynamics of Moving Bodies, which introduced the theory of Special Relativity, the concept of the aether (the hypothesized medium through which light waves were thought to propagate) is effectively discarded.

When pre-1905 conceptions of aether was discarded, it was because of Occam's Razor told us to discard that which is unnecessary to explain what we observe if it can be conceived without it. Occam's Razor is not a law of science, but it is generally followed because explanations tend to become unnecessarily embellished. Einstein's aether was not physical in a pre-1905 theory sense, despite the utility that it had in developing Maxwell's theory. Einstein found the position of total rejection of an aether to be untenable. This was produced with Notebook LM.
