Magnolia Fairy Cream, also called Michelia Fairy Cream or Magnolia Fairy Cream Blush, is a very fragrant magnolia with creamy-whitish flowers, ideal for small fragrant gardens in the UK and USDA 7 to 10 (some sources report USDA 7 to 11). This is one of the smallest Magnolias available on the market, due to the fact that this plant reaches a height and spread of 2.5 metres in height and width in about 20 years.
Magnolia Fairy Cream is a cross of Magnolia species belonging the subgenus Michelia, but I had difficulties in finding which ones, so I asked a question on the facebook page Magnolia Heaven ( / 366779610007125 ) and I was directed to this very interesting article ( https://jury.co.nz/2017/08/03/the-jur... ) : as you can read, Magnolia Fairy Cream (as well as the pink flowered Magnolia Fairy Blush) is a hybrid between Magnolia (Michelia) x foggii crossed with Michelia (Michelia) laevifolia; Magnolia (Michelia) x foggii is itself a hybrid and between Magnolia (Michelia) figo and Magnolia (Michelia) dolstopa.
Magnolia Fairy Cream is a gorgeous shrub / small tree, both for the evergreen glossy foliage and also for the spectacular blooming in spring: the branches are almost fully covered of beautiful cup-shaped flowers, creamy-whitish, that are among the most strongly scented of my magnolias, with a fragrance clearly detectable as you approach the flower with your nose; the fragrance is not only strong, but also extremely pleasant, with a scent that I would describe fruity and citrusy at the same time, with the fruity notes that to me remind the smell of well ripen, freshly cut pineapples and honeydew melons; very difficult to describe but definitely a must-smell flower!!! These are not flowers whose scent will waft across your garden so they are not super-strongly scented or intoxicating, but you will sure smell them when you put your nose close to the flower, so they produce a medium strength fragrance by flower standards, but if you restrict the comparison to magnolias, Fairy Cream possesses definitely one of the strongest fragrances among the plants of the genus Magnolia.
As other Magnolias, this variety prefers acidic soil, moist but well drained, and likes to be regularly fertilized (with fertilizer for plants that prefers acidic soil). Magnolia (Michelia) Fairy Cream thrives in full sun, but is adaptable also to partial shade. This plant has branches that are quite thin and delicate, so it is important to plant it in a sheltered area. In addition to be a great plant when planted in soil in the garden, it is a wonderful specimen plant for large containers, great for a patio, and if you live in USDA zones 6 or lower, planting it in containers allows would allow you to bring it in an area protected from prolonged frost, such as a conservatory or a cold greenhouse. If you live in an an area where this plant can be grown outdoors (USDA zone 7 and higher), it can also be used as a gorgeous, evergreen hedge (as long as they are not exposed to strong winds).
