This 2022 reboot brings us Batman as a detective, solving the mystery of the murders of public figures in Gotham City. The accompanying score by Michael Giacchino has fitting detective-like qualities – cutting, mysterious, persistent – but also romantic, emotive, even seductive qualities. This arrangement focuses on three characters’ themes: Batman, Catwoman, and the Riddler. “The Batman” opens with the demanding motif of the Dark Knight, but soon reveals the more elegant, melodious motif of Bruce Wayne. “Catwoman” is a leisurely jazz number that reflects not only her personality, but also older and brighter days for Gotham City. “The Riddler” begins with a haunting melody reminiscent of the character’s past as a choir boy and then moves into a bombastic rendition holding the villain’s present-day rage. Finally, our piece ends with the opening song of the film, “Can’t Fight City Halloween”, in which you’ll hear the Dark Knight’s theme in full force.
