Mexican Baseball: How Immigrants Lose Their History | David Garcia | TEDxUTK

In trying to understand why he had missed out on what had been a cornerstone pastime of his father's generation, David Garcia discovered that economic and immigration policy had created a subtle shift in Mexican cultural heritage; people stopped playing baseball. In his talk, David reminds us that the actions we take towards immigration have an impact that goes beyond statistics and economics; immigration policy changes individual lives and can shift the cultural evolution of a generation. David urges everyone to look beyond the statistics and discover the stories from the lives of those who are affected by immigration policy.

David Garcia was born in West Chicago Illinois and raised in both the US and Mexico. He attended Ripon College where earned his Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry and History. David currently attends the University of Tennessee Knoxville as a graduate student in the Bredesen Center for Interdisciplinary Research and Graduate Education. His academic research focuses on the use of protein-production methods to answer questions in structural and synthetic biology. An active member of the Hispanic community, David has worked as a volunteer for various non-profit groups serving the Latin American community, including Knoxville’s own Centro Hispano de East Tennessee.
