Collegiate Record: Liam Murphy Leads Two Others Under Former 1500-Meter Best
It was only a matter of time.

Three minutes, 33.02 seconds, to be exact.

Liam Murphy and Co. continued their absolute siege on the collegiate record book on Thursday at the Raleigh Relays. Murphy shattered the outdoor – and absolute collegiate record – in the 1500 meters with his 3:33.02 clocking in the Tar Heel State. The Villanova standout led two other men under the old standard of 3:33.74 set by Eliud Kipsang of Alabama back in 2012: teammate Marco Langon in 3:33.38 and Gary Martin of Virginia in 3:33.71.

With a pacer and pace lights leading the way, Murphy covered the first 300 meters in 43.41, the next 400 meters in 58.38, the next lap in 57.06 and then closed in 54.18 to etch his name into the collegiate record book. That means Murphy traversed the final 800 meters in 1:51.24.

Fun fact: Murphy also took down the Villanova in-season program record, which had stood for 44 years. Whose record was it? Sydney Maree, who set a longstanding CR of 3:35.30 back in 1981. Maree has now been knocked out of the all-time collegiate top-10 completely after yesterday’s result.
