Gravitational waves – ripples in spacetime – were predicted in 1916 by Einstein. The first observation took place in 2015 and exposed the merger of two black holes. Right now scientists and engineers are working on the underground Einstein Telescope, which will become Europe's most advanced observatory for gravitational waves. Dr Gideon Koekoek (Maastricht University) explains how you can detect these waves and what they learn us about the early universe. Dr ir Michiel van Limbeek (UT) discusses a method to increase the telescope’s sensitivity, which is to cool the mirrors to -263 oC.
