There is this myth going around that says you cannot gain muscle mass after the age of 50; it was probably created by a young person. The truth is you can gain strength, power and mass. As we are over 50 the body may fatigue a little easier than we did when younger, but that’s more due to our natural hormone shifts, possibly some weight gain or because of previous injuries.
In fact, strength training is very important for those of us over 50 as it helps to prevent bone loss , help burn calories and enhances our memory. Weight lifting can also boost our immune system by increasing the number of circulating immune cells. It seems that pushing our bodies has many benefits, even as we enter our 50’s and beyond.
There are some key points to exercising. Make sure you warm-up well. Your soft tissue isn’t as elastic as it once was so keeping it lose is very important. Make sure you utilize great form. It is best to use lower weight with perfect form than to “cheat” and use heavier weight. Exercising in front of a mirror helps you keep taps on your form. Make sure you get your rest and eat right. The benefits of weight lifting occur during the “repair”. Exercising the same body parts without rest exposes you to injury as well as will not allow you to reach your full gains. Lastly, make sure you progressively increase your weight load from work-out to work-out. Listen to your body, you will know when it’s time to increase weight.
Remember if you don’t use it, you’ll lose it. If you haven’t been in the gym, get yourself back to build muscle, stay healthy and look younger.
