Vatican City is the world's smallest country. It has a size of 0.44 km2 (0.44 km2/0.17 sq mi). It's so small that Tokyo Disneyland is even bigger than it. So why does a country that's even smaller than a theme park exist? As we all know, the popes ruled this small country. However, many years ago, the popes ruled over this vast territory known as the Papal States. The Kingdom of Italy next door, however, thought Rome would be an excellent capital for their country, and so they conquered the Papal States. The Pope hid in the Vatican and refused to acknowledge the existence of the Kingdom of Italy. The Kingdom of Italy does not want to spark a religious civil war by deposing the Pope, so they simply wait for him to resign. However, nothing had changed 60 years later. So, in 1929, Benito Mussolini, Italy's prime minister at the time, decided to give the pope the land of Vatican City as well as some money. In exchange, the Pope would recognize Italy's existence and remain politically and militarily neutral (the Lateran Treaty). And thus was born the country of Vatican City. And, even after Mussolini was voted out of power and the Italian monarchy came to an end, the new Italian republic continued to recognize the country of Vatican City. In conclusion, despite its small size, Vatican City still has an interesting and unique history to learn about.
