Locals on Aotea (Great Barrier Island) are increasingly living off the land to survive.

The cost of living crisis and rising freight prices means growing and hunting your own food and being self-sufficient is an everyday necessity.

Kaitiaki o Aotea Rodney Ngawaka says this means whānau Māori on the off-the-grid island are learning from and living as their tūpuna did before colonisation.
