There’s really nothing like that soft, smooth newborn skin. But, sometimes you’ll start to notice unsightly scaly patches appearing on your cute baby’s head. What’s that all about??

Chances are it’s cradle cap—or infantile seborrheic dermatitis. Think of it as a form of infant dandruff. Unlike adult dandruff, though, there’s no itching or irritation. Just scales on the scalp, forehead, or eyebrows that are yellow tinged and typically greasy. Sometimes these scales also show up in the groin, armpits, ears, and eyelids.

Even though it isn’t exactly how you pictured baby’s skin looking, cradle cap is nothing to worry about. In fact, it affects up to 70% of babies in the first three months of life.

Nobody knows for sure why so many babies get cradle cap, but some theories include:
An imbalanced gut microbiome
A yeast infection
A weakened immune system
Nutritional imbalances
And elevated maternal hormones

But I’m guessing the real reason you’re here is to find out what you can do to get rid of cradle cap—and stat!

Luckily, it’s just a cosmetic issue that probably bothers you more than it bothers your baby. And since cradle cap doesn’t hurt or itch, the easiest option is to just let it be. In most cases cradle cap will clear on its own within a few months.

But if that just won’t do, there are five strategies to help get rid of it quickly and naturally, including:

Soften with oil: Some parents find simply massaging a raw vegetable oil into the scalp once a day works wonders to calm inflammation and nourish baby’s tender skin.

Make a special ACV shampoo: It’s probiotic and antifungal to help balance out the scalp naturally. Mix 2 TB raw apple cider vinegar with 1/4 cup filtered water. Pour the mixture over baby’s scalp, making sure that none gets in their eyes. Massage the scalp for a few minutes. Let sit 10 minutes, then rinse with water.

Exfoliate with a brush: After using the special shampoo, or several hours after applying an oil, brush the scalp gently. The softened scales will come off much more easily, without damaging the scalp itself. Just be sure to use a natural brush with very soft bristles.

If you don’t see any progress after a few weeks, it may signal a deeper issue, like a gut imbalance or mineral deficiency. If you suspect that’s the case, these natural remedies can help:

Supplements for mama: Breastfeeding moms can pass on important nutrients, specifically biotin, zinc, B6, selenium, and manganese.

Probiotics for baby: Boost baby’s gut flora by adding an baby probiotic to their bottle.

Although you—understandably—want to make sure baby is comfortable and healthy, remember that cradle cap is really just a cosmetic issue. And it’s only temporary.

Don’t stress yourself out if baby’s cradle cap isn’t getting much better. Do what you can to keep baby comfortable, and if it becomes significantly inflamed, itchy, cracked, or oozes fluid, contact your child’s pediatrician.
