Meet Msituni, a three-month-old giraffe calf at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, whose survival was uncertain from the very start.
She was born with unstable wrist joints—a condition known as hyperextension of the carpi—causing her front legs to bend the wrong way. Standing and walking were nearly impossible, and without intervention, her chances of survival would have been very low.
The zoo’s wildlife care team partnered with specialists from Hanger Clinic, who normally build orthotic devices for people. Together, they crafted custom carbon-graphite braces with a giraffe pattern to gently straighten her legs. With careful monitoring, physical therapy, and bottle feedings, Msituni slowly grew stronger—first on her right leg, and then on her left.
But her challenges didn’t end there. She also received treatment for blood abnormalities, antibiotics, and even specialized hoof extenders to help correct the position of her back legs. Step by step, she overcame every setback.
Finally, the braces came off. Msituni’s legs were straight, her stride was strong, and she was healthy enough to join the rest of the giraffe herd in the zoo’s 60-acre East Africa savanna habitat. There she bonded with another calf, Nuru, who was born just four days after her, and reunited with her mother.
From fragile beginnings to running free, Msituni’s journey is a powerful reminder of what love, science, and teamwork can achieve. 🦒💚
