El costarricense tuvo una muy promisoria primera temporada en la Universidad de Utah, viniendo desde el banco como repulsivo y promediando 5.2 Pts por partido distribuidos en 50% de campo, 32% desde el triple y un destacado 84% desde la línea de libres. El tico complementó su average de la temporada con 1.9 Rbs y 0.8 Ast por encuentro, en 25 juegos disputados. Utah finalizó su temporada con marca de 12-13 en la competitiva conferencia PAC-12, y dicho registro vio a su técnico despedido, lo que provocó la transferencia de Martínez hacia la Universidad de Maryland, y además la salida de su padre como asistente técnico, Henry Martínez.

El combo guard de 1.93m de estatura se convirtió apenas en el quinto costarricense en jugar División 1 NCAA en toda la historia, compartiendo dicho honor además con su hermano mayor Avery Martínez, quien pudo jugar con California State Northridge antes de transferirse a una división menor.

The Costa Rican had a very promising first season at the University of Utah, coming off the bench as bench scorer and averaging 5.2 PPG distributed in 50% from the field, 32% from three-point land and an outstanding 84% from the free throw line. The Tico complemented his average of the season with 1.9 RPG and 0.8 APG, in 25 games played. Utah finished its season with a 12-13 record in the competitive PAC-12 conference. That record saw its coach fired, prompting Martinez's transfer to the University of Maryland, as well as the departure of his father as assistant coach to the staff, Henry Martínez.

The 6'3 tall combo guard became only the fifth Costa Rican ever to play Division 1 NCAA, sharing that honor in a list that includes his older brother Avery Martínez, who was able to play with California State Northridge before transferring to a lower division.
