A Canadian seeding success is heading overseas, as Vaderstad is bringing its Seed Hawk air drill to European farms for 2024.

In this report from Agritechnica '23 in Hanover, Germany, Vaderstad's Bernt Martensson explains how the company has modified the machine to fit the specific needs of smaller European farms. In Canada, the air seeder typically measures 24 metres, but for the new market the company will offer the Seed Hawk in three dimensions — six, eight and nine metres.

Martensson says the Seed Hawk's front disc will play a key role in Europe where growers struggle with heavy residue at planting. He notes that the new machines will carry its patented opener but will also be fitted with a unique front disc to cut straw and residue and allow it to pass much easier through the machine.

In North America, Martensson says seeders typically have to contend with five to seven tonnes of crop residue per hectare. In Europe, that number is often 10 or 11 tonnes. The air drill will carry three different tanks to give growers seed and fertilizer application flexibility.
