Canada is grappling with its worst wildfire season, with over 20,000 people evacuating
Yellowknife, the capital of the Northwest Territories. These fires have burned over 13.7 million
hectares, with 669 out of control. This year's fires started in late April, displacing thousands and
affecting oil and gas production. Limited infrastructure in the Northwest Territories poses
evacuation challenges, and some communities have already suffered severe damage. Smoke
from the fires has led to poor air quality across Canada and parts of the United States.
Projections suggest continued high fire activity in August and September, with drought and high
temperatures exacerbating the situation. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau attributes the
increase in wildfires to climate change, making fire seasons longer and more severe.
