On 31 August 2025, a powerful 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan near Jalalabad, shaking the Hindu Kush region. The disaster destroyed hundreds of mud houses in Kunar, Nangarhar, and nearby areas, leaving behind heartbreaking damage. Sadly, over 800 people lost their lives and nearly 2,800 were injured. Many families are still trapped, and blocked roads and rough mountain terrain are making rescue efforts difficult.
The tremors were so strong that people in Delhi NCR and parts of northern India felt the ground shake. Furniture moved, and panic spread as residents rushed outdoors.
The Taliban government has appealed for urgent international support. Humanitarian groups like the UN and Red Crescent are already on the ground, but the need for food, shelter, and medical supplies remains high.
India quickly responded with aid. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar spoke with Afghanistan’s Foreign Minister and promised full support. India has sent 1,000 family tents to Kabul and 15 tonnes of food to Kunar province, with more supplies like medicines and relief items on the way. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed grief and solidarity with Afghan families. Along with India, China, Iran, and Turkey have also pledged help.
Afghanistan is highly prone to earthquakes because it lies on a fault line between the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. The 2025 quake was shallow, about 10 km deep, which made the shaking much stronger on the surface.
