After working at UPA on Mr. Magoo, Phil joined the studio of Bill Melendez, the creative force behind Charlie Brown. Bill became one of the greatest influences in Phil’s life.

One day, Bill walked into Phil’s office with a stack of storyboards and said:

“I’m going to be busy directing something else. Can you finish directing this Charlie Brown special?”

Phil said yes.

Though he had never directed before, Phil studied Bill’s timing, pacing, and visual rhythm carefully - ensuring the transition felt seamless. The result worked.

From that moment on, Phil Roman directed the Charlie Brown television specials until 1983 - shaping the tone, timing, and emotional language of some of the most beloved holiday programs ever made.
