Margaret Bonds -Composer, pianist and teacher, MargaretBonds firststudied composition
and piano with noted composer, Florence Price. She studied at Northwestern University
and the Juilliard school. She was the first African-American to solo the Chicago symphony
orchestra performing Florence Price’s Piano Concerto. As a highly successful composer,
Margaret Bonds wrote for orchestra, choir chamber ensemble , piano and voice frequently
collaborating with Langston Hughes. Little of her piano music was written down since
she was a master improviser and played most of her works from memory. bonds, received
numerous awards during her lifetime for her contributions to the music of African-
Americans. Her piano music includes Spirituals Suite, Tangamerican and Fugal Dance.
