Should the point man open the door — or should someone else do it for him?

Short answer: it depends. Context, mission, and SOP should decide — not habit.

Option A — Point man opens the door
Pros
• Immediate agency — he controls timing and momentum.
• Keeps the primary in hand and ready to react.
• Works for fast, aggressive entries where tempo matters.

Cons (nuanced)
• You lose a fraction of readiness while you interact with the obstacle. That fraction can matter.
• If you fumble while manipulating the door, you’ve exposed yourself in the breach zone.
• It assumes you have no dedicated opener — some doors (automated, heavy breachers, roll/pull doors) benefit from someone whose only job is to clear that obstacle. That adds personnel demand.
• When using a shield, someone must open for the shield-bearer — so the point man can’t always be the opener.
• (Note: under NVG or when absolute silence is required, having someone else open the door can be highly beneficial — but it still comes with coordination cost.)

Option B — Team opens the door for the point man
Pros
• Point man keeps the platform ready and sees the moment the door frees.
• Useful with shield work, planned effects (flashbang), or when you need the platform’s mounted tools preserved.
• Preserves immediate readiness if the sequence is rehearsed.

Cons
• Adds coordination and timing demands — more moving parts under stress.
• The act of someone else opening can flag intent or create noise if not rehearsed.
• Slower if the team hasn’t practiced the sequence.

Decision filter (simple):
1. Mission profile — urgent intervention vs deliberate search.
2. Toolset — shield, breacher, flash, or mounted kit that the point needs.
3. Light & concealment — under NVG/low-noise, preserve readiness differently.
4. Team skill & SOP — if the team drills the sequence, coordination costs drop.

Rule of thumb we teach:
Train both options. Default to the method that fits your mission and your team’s practiced sequence. If you haven’t rehearsed a coordinated opener, don’t invent it under stress.

Final thought:
This is not a style argument. It’s a trade-off. Know the trade you accept — and train it until it’s reflex.
