We have just heard that Keir Starmer has sacked Peter Mandelson.

Yesterday the prime minister said he had "full confidence" in Mandelson and he was "playing an important role in UK-US relations".

But this has changed in light of additional information in emails written by Mandelson.

The Foreign Office has released this statement: "The emails show that the depth and extent of Peter Mandelson’s relationship with Jeffrey Epstein is materially different from that known at the time of his appointment.

"In particular Peter Mandelson’s suggestion that Jeffrey Epstein’s first conviction was wrongful and should be challenged is new information."

Last week the party was thrown into turmoil when Angela Rayner resigned.
