"We have altered just a few of our procedures, specifically in St Peter's Square where we have our well-known restoration of the colonnade around St Peter's Square. We had to adjust our work to the event so we gave instructions to the group doing the work not to make dust, not to make noise, so to adapt the work to the necessities of this event."

STORYLINE:
As cardinal-electors remain engaged in the process of choosing the next pope, journalists and faithful continue to converge in their thousands at Saint Peter's Square in the Vatican, hoping to witness the white smoke signalling a decision.
Amid all of this, dozens of restorers are hard at work on the famed colonnade that embraces St Peter's Square, scraping and scrubbing to restore it to its original glory.
Italian sculptor Gian Lorenzo Bernini designed the spectacular colonnade and supervised its construction between 1656-1667.
Each "arm" of the colonnade that reaches out from Saint Peter's Basilica, is made of up of four rows of columns carved from travertine.
On top of the columns are 140 statues perched around the edge of the square.
Restorers are working with painstaking care, delicately chipping, scrubbing and sponging some of the 284 columns being restored around the square.
The multi-million euro restoration project began with the first test on the statues and columns in 2007 and is expected to continue into 2015.
Once they are finished with the colonnade, the restorers will turn to the two fountains and the obelisk in the square.
Master Restorer Guy Devreux, head of the Vatican Laboratory for the Restoration of Marble and Casts, says they've made some small adjustments in their work in deference to the ongoing conclave, but work must continue.
