As revealed in the NT Independent, then Deputy Chief Minister & Attorney-General Chansey Paech held shares in Metcash, a company that supplied alcohol to bottle shops in Central Australia, WHILST he was advocating AGAINST continuing alcohol bans in the region (i.e Stronger Futures federal legislation). Paech divested the shares shortly after the NT Independent exposed then chief minister Natasha Fyles for multiple instances of holding undisclosed mining shares. Undisclosed shares held by Fyles included South 32, who operate the Gemco manganese mine on Groote Eylandt (NT). As Health Minister, Natasha Fyles declined to investigate South 32 for the suspected heavy metal poisoning of Indigenous Territorians on Groote Eylandt (NT), despite South 32’s own admission it had exceeded it’s dust allowance for a portion of 2022.
